New GIS App to Help Three Counties Solve Child Abduction Cases

MSA Professional Services and the Juneau County Land Information Office will share their experience creating a GIS app to support the Juneau, Adams and Wood Counties’ Child Abduction Response Team (JAW CART). The three counties joined efforts to create a specialized unit trained in responding to and investigating unexplained child disappearances and child abductions. Juneau County suggested that a GIS app could aid search and investigation procedures. The County took the lead and sought help in developing the app from MSA.

Through discussions with members of the JAW CART team, MSA configured Esri’s Operations Response solution to fit their needs. Search managers can use the app to locate all registered sex offenders within a specified distance from an incident point. They can also define search areas, track canvassing information, note where evidence is found and identify various locations important to the investigation. Because all information is tracked in one centralized app, it allows all members of the CART team to have the same operational view of the search and investigation. The presenters will describe the process to refine the app through input from members of the CART team; how the simplicity of ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online and The Web AppBuilder provided the flexibility to continually modify the app. They also will demonstrate how the app is used during an incident.

Vector Tiles: Styling Your Own Base Maps
ArcGIS now includes support for vector tiles as layers in a web map for use in web mapping, desktop, and mobile applications. These new vector tile layers offer many benefits for high-performance display of vector features on high-resolution devices, and new opportunities for users to customize maps to support their unique requirements. Esri now offers new vector basemaps that are designed to complement the existing basemaps that have been available for several years. With these vector basemaps, you are able to turn on and off layers, change symbology, and even update boundaries and labels by updating the style for the map. In this workshop, we will describe how users can customize vector tile layers, with an emphasis on the Esri vector basemaps, to support their maps and apps. We will demonstrate examples of custom vector tile maps created by Esri and users and how you can quickly create custom maps leveraging various tools and online content available to you.

Building 3D Web Apps: A Step by Step Guide
Learn how to build 3D interactive web applications using the 4.0 version of the ArCGIS API for JavaScript and ArCGIS Online/Portal for ArcGIS web scenes. Using web scenes in your applications minimizes the amount of code needed to build interactive web applications. The web scene author creates the scene, adds layers, configures an attractive popup and styles the scene to bring the data to life. Once the web scene is ready the developer can use it to quickly build attractive interactive apps. This session will cover the workflow of authoring and publishing 3D content in ArcGIS Pro to creating your web scene all the way to building your 3D web app.

Now that I have a Terabyte of LiDAR data, what do I do?
Milwaukee County now has multiple years of LiDAR data and is currently using this data to assist in the quality control of its planimetric update project. They also use this to create derived raster products including slope, intensity, and digital surfaces.  Vegetative coverage has been produced to capture tree canopy and estimated tree growth.  Subtraction of the surfaces have shown where land is falling from the bluffs and into Lake Michigan as well as how local streams can erode and change shape over time.  Milwaukee County utilizes ArcGIS desktop with 3D analyst along with the esri extension to LP360 to produce these products.

Emerging Technologies: GIS and IoT in Local Government
The world is evolving to become a massive sensor network, with devices such as phones, vehicles, LED lights, and even wearable items like smart watches fueling this system with data. Within the GIS and spatial industries, this evolution is creating opportunities to consider our industry from a new vantage point. When a locational component is added to the IoT (Internet of Things) ecosystem, these streams of data come to life in our maps and apps with an enormous amount of actionable intelligence. These are valuable tools in our journey towards safer and more efficient communities.

Approaches to Spatial Analysis
Perhaps the most interesting and dynamic aspect in all of GIS is spatial analysis, which can range from focused data visualization and exploration to a range of analytical models that aid in problem solving. This is the difference between GIS and all other mapping applications. And it's why many of us choose to work with GIS. There is a simple method - an approach that guides all spatial analysis. And it's easy to apply this framework. In this workshop we will introduce these methods and approaches along with the key workflows that underpin all spatial analysis. We will illustrate these through a series of real-world case studies. Our goal is to transform your work by enabling you to be a spatial analyst badass. Topics that we will cover include: - Spatial Data Exploration, including interactive smart mapping, charting, graphing, summarization, and interpretation - The data science behind understanding and interpreting all geographic information. This is the heart of all analysis - An approach to Spatial Problem Solving - A GIS approach to Geodesign - Case studies that put these processes to work for real-world situations. Intended Audience: All ArcGIS users who want to get the most out of the promise of what GIS has to offer.

An introduction to lidar point cloud processing in ArcGIS with 3D Analyst
In recent years ESRI has improved the ability to view and process lidar point clouds with the addition of the LAS dataset file structure (.lasd file extension).  After loading all LAS files in your project, the LASD toolbar allows viewing of the points and attributes (elevation, class, return), as well as surfaces (with or without non-ground points).  Statistics (number of points, classes, min, max, etc) for each LAS files and the whole collection are accessible.  The LASD file and tools can be used to create digital elevation models (DEM) and digital surface models (DSM).  All these functions will be demonstrated so users can see how easy it is to work with large lidar point clouds, which are becoming increasingly available through open data sites like WisconsinView, National Map and county GIS data portals.
